This costume may well have been worn in both Narcisse and Daphnis et Chloe The belted tunic can be seen in Bert’s on-stage photographs of Narcisse. It is seen wrapped in the shawl in publicity images for Daphnis and Chloe. A design by Bakst for Narcisse shows the costume, tunic, shorts, shawl and felt hat. It was auctioned by Sotheby as a costume for Daphnis et Chloe

Brief description
Costume designed by Bakst apparently used in both of Fokine's ballet Narcisse, 1911 and Daphnis et Chloe, 1912
Physical description
Costumedesigned by Leon Bakst for a 'Greek' ballet presented by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and first used in Narcisse.
Large white molded felt circular cone-shaped hat, the brim is with undulating red lines accented by stylized blue waves.
Scarf Shaped belt of off white cotton painted with lines in greenish blue.
White cotton shorts painted around the legs with bright orange spots, undulating greenish blue lines and deep greenish blue rectangles.
White tunic painted with large circular motifs enclosing orange trefoils on blue spotted ground. At the hem is a painted greenish blue band and at the neck lines in orange and greenish blue with sleeve edgings in a greenish blue dog tooth pattern.
Object history
Having been the property of the Diaghilev and de Basil Foundation Ltd this costume was acquired by the Museum of Performing Arts at the Sotheby action of Costumes and curtains from Diaghilev & de Basil ballets on 19 December 1969 and it was given by the Friends of the Museum of Performance to the V&A.
