Shoes for Grizabella in Cats
1981
These well-worn shoes belonged to Elaine Paige, who originated the role of Grizabella in Cats at the New London Theatre. In the musical’s first scene, Paige’s character was introduced as a playful kitten, later appearing disheveled in tattered coat and heels as the aging Glamour Cat. Inspired by T.S Eliot’s unpublished poem, Grizabella’s solo number ‘Memory’, with lyrics by director Trevor Nunn, has gone on to become one of musical theatre’s most recognisable songs.
