Brief description | Vinyl Barbie doll, Mystical Manipuri, with white nylon sash made in India by Mattel Toys (India) Ltd in 1997 |
Production type | mass produced |
Object history | The doll, made in India for the Indian market by a Mattel subsidiary, is a standard open mouthed version but NOT MARKED. The box label description reads:- Cosmetically immaculate and charming, Barbie emerging as the enchantress is a picture of beauty in her Manipuri best. Come to Barbie in Manipur where heaven meets earth in the hum of paradise. |
Historical context | Manipur is a north eastern area and the regional dancers wear one of the most beautiful cotumes. Dark orange or green skirts are stiffened from the thigh to the ankle and decorated with gold thread embroidery; tiny mirrors are also added. Over the skirt is worn a short, silver gauze, gathered skirt edged with a golden border. A coloured choli is worn with a fine guaze veil draped over a special hair style. Belts and jewelry complete this costume. Box description:- MYSTICAL MANIPURI Lush greenery, misty mountains, breathtaking views, soothing amiable tribes and diverse cultures, That is Manipur. One of the seven sisters of the north east nook of India. The traditional Manipuri dance dress looks more to demonstrating a rich background that is based on folk times and myth. The skirt, stiff and fast bends around the waist running down to a vertical flow to form a largish bell shaped canopy look. The hairdo is tall with a transluscent and glittering sash draped over the head. |
