Make-Up Case
pre 1973 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This leather toiletries case belonged to the English playwright, composer and actor Noël Coward (1899-1973), who styled his many accomplishments as a 'talent to amuse'. The case was made by the firm of Asprey of London, fitted inside with leather compartments for bottles, dishes and brushes and filled with a large assortment of Coward's make-up and toiletries, prescription medicines, brushes and sponges, bottles, scissors, saucers, and even a razor and his denture powder and ear plugs. Coward must have used it for several years since it is crammed with items, the weight of which proved too much for the handle which was worn through when it came to the Museum.
Attached to the case is part of a luggage label which originally identified Noël Coward's address as 17, Gerald Road, the house in London's Belgravia in which from 1930 until 1956 he lived in the top floor flat.
