COSTUME DESIGN FOR WAITING FOR GODOT
1955

Beckett’s text does not describe the characters of Estragon and his companion Vladimir. Peter Hall, director of the first British production of Waiting for Godot, imagined them as tramps. Peter Snow dressed them in ill-fitting clothes and battered hats and turned them into iconic figures. The play’s meaning continues to be a subject for debate, but Snow’s costumes have defined its characters.
