The medal commemorates the centenary of the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, also the inaugural journey of George Stephenson’s steam-driven locomotive (Locomotion No. 1) which heralded the birth of railway transportation. It shows Vulcan, the god of fire, holding a model of Locomotion No. 1, with a Pacific Class locomotive in the background.
