This poster was designed by H. Zanger for the Works Projects Administration (WPA). The WPA was a government agency established by U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt in 1935 as the Works Progress Administration, though the name was altered in 1939. It was designed to set up projects and programmes to relieve the mass unemployment resulting from the economic depression of the time. The WPA promoted projects for artists, writers, and actors as well as encouraging urban renewal through building initiatives in cities. This poster would have been displayed on the New York subway system as a means of advertising the city's highlights.
