Portrait miniature of a man, head and shoulders, turned slightly to right and looking to front; a landscape in the background. Features in very short hatching strokes of sanguine and grey, with white blending and heightening, on a thin, pale carnation ground; hair in dark brown wash, hatched and lined in darker colour and with pale gouache lights; collar in pale grey wash with the lights, especially on the fringe, in thick white; sky background in blue wash, hatched in darker colour, and with the clouds in grey and ochre washes, hatched with darker colour and with white heightening; on vellum put down on pasteboard backed with a sheet of blue paper.
Frame: Nineteenth-century copper-gilt rim, with a flat granulated face between two concave quadrants, holding a convex glass in a rebate; the back closed by a toothed copper strip holding a green velvet-covered card backboard.
