After Rubens’ death, Jacob Jordaens became the most prominent artist in the Southern Netherlands. He was particularly skilled in tapestry design. This decorative drawing is a preparatory study for one of a series of eight tapestries. The series was probably made to decorate the walls of a rural hunting lodge. It celebrates the pleasures and activities of country life.
