Munch made the woodblock for this print from three blocks – one sawn into three pieces – inking them separately before reassembling them for printing. This inventive jigsaw-puzzle method had the effect of creating white lines in the resulting impression, suggesting the figure’s isolation. The wood’s vertical grain, particularly visible in the face, conveys an intense feeling of melancholy.
