Object history | Khayr al'Din Barbaroussa was a pirate who agreed to serve under Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. He was of Greek descent and became legendary for his reign of terror over the Mediterranean in the early sixteenth century. He attacked and took possession of Algiers, later assisting Süleyman in an assault on Tunis. He died in Constantinople in 1546. |
