Object history | Atahuallpa was the last of the Inca rulers in Peru. Son of Huayna Capac, he ruled the kingdom of Quito in the sixteenth century. In 1532, he was obliged to relinquish his power to invading Spanish forces serving under Pizarro. As a result of Atahuallpa's refusal to comply with Pizarro's demands that he submit to Spanish rule and convert to Christianity, he was imprisoned and in 1533, after attempting to rally his own forces against the Spanish, he was killed. |
