Emperor Qianlong was a great collector of ancient bronzes. In his treasury there was a hinge very similar to this jade piece. The function of the bronze hinge is not known. The two square tubes are moveable. Qianlong probably ordered a jade version to be made in order to show off the high level of skill of the jade carvers in the imperial workshop.

Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
Production
This piece appears to be a copy in jade of a Han dynasty bronze hinge illustrated in Qinding Xi Qing Gujian (Preface dated 1794) juan 38, p. 17 a-b.
