Figurine, in the form of a horned animal, carved nephrite jade, China, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), 16th century
Physical description
Figurine of jade. Translucent white shading to deep chestnut-brown and light tan markings. The figure is carved fully in the round, reclining with its body coiled, head turned to the right, front legs folded, and the right hoof slightly raised, the finely incised bushy tail curling at the side, the knobbed spine and hind quarters making use of the darker stone, and dragon's head with antlers which are characteristic of this animal.
