In the imperial palace or other wealthy households incense was burnt not only to perfume a room but also to repel insects. This lidded vase in the form of four tubes originally had an accompanying incense box, a spatula, a pair of chopsticks and a holder for the last two items. The incense could be in stick or powder form. When the perfuming was completed, the lid would be replaced.

Physical description
This lidded vase with four tubes functioned as a censer in the 18th century. When the incense, in stick or powder form, was gently burning the lid would have been taken off, replaced only after the perfuming was completed.

Bequeathed by Mr. W. H. Cope, accessioned in 1903. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
