Wine Pot
1522-1566 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Of all food and wine vessels the ewer is the most difficult shape to make in jade. This is because the maker had to hollow out the inside of the ewer from the mouth. Jade wine pots, like this one, would therefore have been much more valuable and rare than porcelain ones.

Brief description | Jiajing jade wine pot |
Physical description | A handled ewer of green jade, with a pear-shaped body set on a high foot. The hexagonally-facetted spout forms a single curve. The lid is missing. There is an indentation on the top of the handle, possibly to hold some fitting (connecting chain?) for the lid. The sides of the body are flattened; each bears a raised, heart-shaped cartouche worked in low relief with four of the Eight Immortals. The form and iconography both commonly seen on metalwork ceramics of the mid-Ming. The proposed dating is by analogy with these. |
