The pattern on this cup is in imitation of patterns found on archaic bronzes. In the Song dynasty (960-1279) Chinese scholars systematically studied ritual objects from antiquity. That scholarly interest led to many articles being made 'in the ancient style'.

Physical description
Handleless Song/Yuan cup. Mottled white jade with brown markings and striations. With straight tapered sides supported on a low ridged foot: decorated with a striated petal freeze in low relief, a band of incised regular scrollwork and a T-fret border, archaistic bronze-style designs, oval in form.

Bought by Bluett & Sons, on behalf of the V&A at Sotheby's sale, June 18, 1968, Lot No. 173, for £180. Purchased by Museum for £189.

James Watt opinion: could be Song. Rates Desmond Gure's opinions. Thinks details like small incised patterns points to Song rather than Ming-- Ming designs are looser.
