Henry Dixon (1820–93) with Alfred and John Boole
Cloth Fair, London
About 1875

The Society for Photographing Relics of Old London was established in 1875 to document buildings threatened with demolition. This photograph shows an area in the City of London where, in medieval times, merchants gathered to buy and sell cloth. The photograph could be considered a factual record, but it also reflects the nostalgic appeal of the subject matter.
