Object history
Costume for Taglioni worn by Alicia Markova in Anton Dolin's ballet 'Pas de Quatre', ca. 1947. The music for the ballet was composed by Cesare Pugni. The costumes were designed after Chalon's famous illustration of the famous 1845 ballet which featured the four greatest stars of the Romantic ballet: Marie Taglioni, Carlotta Grisi, Fanny Cerrito, and Lucile Grahn. Anton Dolin originally staged his recreation of the ballet for American Ballet Theatre in 1941, and it was subsequently performed by many other companies around the world.
