Place of origin

In 1950 photographer and film-maker Paul Strand left New York for Europe, where he and his wife, Hazel, would remain until his death in 1976. Having settled in Orgeval, a small town near Paris, they began travelling widely, Strand was searching for ‘the perfect village’, sustained by hard-working and honest inhabitants coexisting harmoniously with nature and machines. The straw man in this photograph was seen by Strand to represent this idyll.
