| Object history | The novel by Thomas Hardy was adapted by Karen Louise Hebden, composed by Stephen Edwards with lyrics by Justin Fleming and choreography by Terry John Bates. The musical was directed by Karen Louise Hebden with lighting by Bruno Poet. It ran from 10 November 1999-8 January 2000. This poster doesn't feature that dates of the production or the cast, showing that it was an early poster advertising the production's intention to open at the Savoy when the dates were still uncertain. |
| Historical context | The cast features Alasdair Harvey (Alec D'Urberville), Jonathan Monks (Angel Clare), Philippa Healey and Poppy Tiernay (Tess - alternative performances) along with Maxine Fone (Young Tess), Sara Weymouth (Mrs Joan Durbeyfield), Catherine Debenham-Taylor (Izz Huett), Diane Pilkington (Marian Dewy), Gemma Sandy (Retty Priddle), Paul Haley (Jonathan Kail), Caroline Hobin (Mrs Crick) and David Oakley (Dairyman Crick) with Craig Adams, Susan Anderson, Alison Crowther, Nicola Edwards, Aoibheann Greene, Maria Holley, Robert Irons, Simon Joslin, Katie Leeming, Nicholas Maude, Vincent Penfold, Kate Rawson, Matt Smith and Timothy Taylor. The play was a flop and closed early in January 2000 after only nine weeks. A spokesperson for the production confirmed reports that the production company behind Tess of the D'Urbervilles had gone into receivership. It is believed that a number of unpaid bills have been left behind - with rumours suggesting that the production company can not even pay the crew to get the scenery etc out of the Savoy Theatre - as the spokesperson said, it is unfortunately, 'all a bit of a mess'. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
