Dress

2004 (Made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Since its founding in 1953 the Italian fashion label Missoni established a reputation for striking knitwear in complex patterns and beautiful, rich colour palettes. This has remained their consistent signature.

This dress from 2004 is knitted in heathery purple and brown tones. Its pattern is based upon a traditional 17th century knitting and embroidery pattern called 'bargello work' or 'flame stitch.' Since the 1960s this kind of zig-zag stripe has been one of Missoni's signature designs. To update the traditional pattern for the 21st century, the fabric is embroidered with clear sequins for a subtle surface shimmer.
