Sir Thomas Henry Hall Caine (1853-1931), known as Hall Caine, was the author of several popular English novels including The Shadow of a Crime, the book advertised in this poster, which he wrote in 1885. Caine is also known for having served as secretary to the Pre-Raphaelite poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Maurice Brazil Prendergast (1858-1924) was a Canadian-born artist who lived and worked in the United States. He is known chiefly for working in an Impressionist style, and for capturing images of people at leisure, such as the female figure depicted here.
