This romantic wedding dress was worn by Angela Stamp for her marriage to her best friend, Howard Fineman, on the hottest day recorded in years, 15 August 1976. The design was inspired by a costume for Anne Boleyn in the film 'Anne of the Thousand Days' (1969). Angela describes how the designer 'immediately understood my dream. She and my mother talked me into softening the period style and using the idea of a crinoline to make it more bridal'. There were gasps from the wedding guests when they caught sight of the bride walking down the aisle.

Physical description | Wedding dress with fitted bodice, square neckline, short sleeves made of overlapping petal shapes, and a voluminous skirt with overlapping petal shapes. Worn over a petticoat comprising of several layers of different types of nylon net. Accessorised with a headddress of artificial sprays of lily of the valley, with a veil of silk net. |

Object history | This dress was designed for and worn by Angela Stamp for her marriage to Howard Fineman on 15 August 1976. The design was inspired by a costume for Anne Boleyn in the film 'Anne of the Thousand Days' (1969). Nettie Spiegel came from Berlin on the Kindertransport, and at the age of 16 found employment at a fashion campany in Great Portland Street, London. She then went on to create her own couture house called Neymar. She designed magnificent wedding dresses, costumes for the stage and celebrities came to her from all over the world. On 23rd November 2013, Lord Sacks inaugurated the Bridal Room in the name of the late Nettie Spiegel at Western Marble Arch Synagogue, 32 Great Cumberland Street, London W1H 7TN. |
