Object history
This piece is similar to the blue and white cross-stitch cottons acquired by the V&A in the 1920s and 1950s. Unlike those pieces, however, this was probably made as a souvenir for visitors to China. This form is not a traditional Chinese shape.

It belonged to a medical missionary, Miss Florence Gertrude Sutton (1890-1977), who worked in China from 1920 to 1924. She may have acquired it then or it may have been given to her subsequently by Chinese friends. See RF 1997/1165 for her biography.
