This dramatic landscape is one of the picturesque views of India captured by Samuel Bourne. From July to December 1866, the English photographer toured part of the Himalayan region. Bourne was fascinated by the mountains and captured images of them on glass negatives.

He wrote about his journey in The British Journal of Photography, outlining his route and in some cases describing the scenes he photographed. Later, when he returned to his studio in Simla, he printed multiple copies of this photograph and sold them to the public.

This is a photography of a range of mountains with a snowy peak in the distance. There is a stream in the foreground and a big boulder on the left hand side.

Object history
The photograph was initially part of the photographic collection held in the National Art Library. The markings on the mount are an indication of the history of the object, its movement through the museum and the way in which it is categorised.
The mount is white with evidence of handwritten text across the top.
On the right hand side is a label with: A.in. Karkuti
Bottom left: Label from Bourne catalogue and handwritten title below.

The negative was made in 1866. This print was made before March 1867.
