Massachusetts congressman John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) won the United States Democratic presidential nomination in 1960, with Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973) running on the vice presidential ticket. His opponent was the Republican candidate Richard Milhous Nixon (1913-1994). Kennedy won the national election and served as America's 35th President from 1961 until his assassination in Dallas, Texas in 1963. Taking office at age 43, he was the youngest man ever elected to the U.S. presidency.
