Object history
The carpet was intended as a wall decoration, demonstrating the potential for the technique, and commemorating the Treaty of Commerce between England and France of 1860, and made specifically for the International Exhibition of 1862. It passed into the Royal Collections and was used for furnishing the British Embassy in Paris. It was first lent to the V&A in 1905 when it was shown at the Bethnal Green Museum. Apparently it was later sent back to the British Embassy in Paris, then transferred to the V&A Textiles department. A letter dated 25 March 1905 from the First Commissioner of His Majesty's Works requests that the South Kensington Museum accepts the carpet on loan as King Edward VII was 'especially anxious that it should be deposited at the Museum as he thinks there is no other place so suitable for it' (Nominal File MA/1/R1946).
