Portrait, head and shoulders, turned slightly to right and looking to front; wearing a high collar; a landscape in the background. Features apparently (see Condition) in brown and sanguine hatches with some blue in the shadows, on a pale carnation ground; hair in brown wash with long strokes of darker colour and white heightening; costume in pale brown wash with thick white for the collar, shirt etc., and gold for the figuring on the doublet; background in blue washes with white and yellow for the landscape and clouds; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.

Frame: Twentieth-century copper-gilt oval locket; the convex back in sides stepped forward in three grooves to the bezel, which holds a convex glass; the hanger of D-section, channelled and bifurcating initially into tight turns followed by larger tapering spirals of five turns. Maker's mark: a crown surmounting the initials PD. Scratched inscription: No 148.
