There was fierce competition in the computer games' market in the 1990s between the two Japanese companies, Sega and Nintendo. Each adopted what has since become an iconic character to star in their games. Nintendo had Mario, a short Italian plumber, and Sega had Sonic, a blue hedgehog. This is the earliest Sonic game, the first of many. The other main characters in the Sonic games are his friend and rival Tails, a fox with two tails, and his arch-enemy Dr Robotnik.
