Costume for an unidentified character. Waist length tunic of deep blue velvet with round neck and full length sleeves gathered into huge puffs on the upper arm and fitted to the wrist. The neck and cuffs are edged in narrow gold 'ric rac' braid, and trimmed with a narrow gold Russia braid. At the front, from wide on the shoulders, is fixed a 'chain' of gold interwoven braid ending at centre front chest in a 'Tudor rose' gold medallion.

Object history | Tunic for an unidentified character in Rosella Hightower's ballet 'Henry VIII and his Wives' performed by the Markova-Dolin Ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, ?17th October 1947. The music for the ballet was arranged by Robert Zeller after works by Rossini, and the scenery and costumes were designed by Russell Hartley. |
