Portrait, head and shoulders, to left and looking to front; wearing a ruff. Features in fine short hatches of sanguine and brown with dark grey stipple and touches of white heightening, on a thin, very pale carnation ground; hair a brown wash with pale ochre lights for the curls; ruff in white over a grey wash; costume in gouache decorated with gold, silver and white; background a grey wash, hatched with darker colour lightening to the right; on vellum put down on pasteboard.

Frame: Nineteenth -century gilt rim of V-section holding a convex glass in a rebate at the front; the back closed by a toothed copper strip.
