The sitter could be the son of Jonathan Tyers, the original embellisher of Vauxhall Gardens. One of two sons, Thomas (1726-1787) was a miscellaneous writer who had originally trained in the legal profession. Holding a lucrative share in Vauxhall Gardens, he was a gentleman of leisure and published few works. He is said to have been a lover of literature and a friend of Dr. Johnson.
