An Unknown Man

Portrait Miniature
1665-1670 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Portrait of a man, half-length, turned slightly to right and looking to front, wearing a neckcloth and armour, his hair about his shoulders. Features hatched in brown and sanguine with some blue-grey shading and with touches of red in the lips; blue, black and touches of ochre with white highlights in the eyes; on a pale carnation ground; hair in long strokes of black with pale grey over a brown wash; collar modelled in greys over a white wash; armour in grey washes, modelled in dark grey and dark brown with white for the lights; the rivets in ochre with gold highlights; background to the left a solid dark brown wash and to the right a sky of blue washes with white and a touch of orange for the sunset; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.

Frame: Seventeenth-century oval gold locket with convex back, the originally straight sides, with a single narrow channel, now much altered; the original front now missing; an over-size flat bevelled glass fitted to the front by pushing the upper part of the sides out to form a bezel; a hanger of D-section soldered to what was originally the bottom of the locket, with a short tail for reinforcement, and with two separate diminishing spirals of five turns in flat wire. The original top of the locket still bears finely engraved scroll-and-line ornament and marks of the filed-off hanger. The locket packed out with cut playing cards.
