Preferendum 70

Poster
1970 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Roumanian-born Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) was an illustrator based in New York. The image of a man in a suit drawing a spiral is a reprisal of a Steinberg motif from an earlier drawing for the New Yorker magazine (1964). The figure can be interpreted as an artist who becomes encircled by - and merges with - his creation. In this image, the spiral exists in three-dimensional space, alternately behind and in front of its creator.
