Object history
Costume for the Butterfly worn by Adeline Genée in the ballet 'A Dream of Roses and Butterflies', London Coliseum, 12th June 1911. The choreography for the ballet was by Adeline Genée; the music was selected from works by Gounod, Eilenberg, Moszkowski, and Delibes; the scenery was designed by Philip Howden, and the costumes were designed by Wilhelm.

'A Dream of Roses and Butterflies' was an extended version of the divertissement 'Roses and Butterflies', first presented by Genée in the musical comedy 'The Bachelor Belles', at the Chestnut Street Opera House, Philadelphia on 3rd October1910. Genée expanded the divertissement for London, adding an introduction in which a young girl, after a lovers' tiff and reconciliation, falls asleep on her couch, holding the posy of roses he has given her - the divertissement being her dream.
