Lillian Bassman (b.1917)
Dress by Omar Kiam for Ben Reig
American Harper’s Bazaar, 1950

Bassman said of her photographs: ‘I almost always focus on a long, elegant neck.’ The ethereal quality of her work was achieved by printing through tissue or removing one element of the camera lens to produce a soft-focus effect. Here, the individual white dots on the dress were hand painted onto the photograph after printing.
