Gallery label
Gallery 100 ‘A History of Photography’, 2014-2015, label text: Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) Shop Window, Hungary 1931 Cartier-Bresson studied under the Cubist artist André Lhote. He became interested in photography in 1930, around the same time he met the Surrealists. This surreal image of a shop window reveals a strong sense of geometry and composition. Cartier-Bresson said of his photography, ‘For me the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which, in visual terms, questions and decides simultaneously’.
