Costume worn by Renée Jeanmarie as Carmen in scene 2 of Carmen, Prince's Theatre, London, 1949. Ballet costume in the form of a corselet of black slub silk with gathered chatreuse chiffon over each breast. The chiffon is trimmed with a row of black chenille pom-poms which extend around the upper arm, supported on a pink elastic base. Down the centre front is a vertical strip of white cotton, set with a row of seven black silk-covered buttons. The bottom of the corselet ends in a full gathered frill of black silk net edged with a band of black crin. At the base of the corselet and over the top edge of the frill is a swathed band of black and pale yellow-green chiffon ending in two tails on the left hip; the right hip is trimmed with two large chenille pom-poms. The corselet is supported on the shoulders by flesh-coloured elastic shoulder straps. The costume is built onto an unlined bra top and the remainder of the corselet is lined with flesh coloured nylon.
