McCullin is best known for his war photographs, but these earlier works made as a personal project show he had already developed a skill for capturing hardship. Here, men and women forage for coal to supplement their meagre fuel supplies during winter in the northeast. In some of the images, bodies blur into the land. In others, however, McCullin presents compelling individual portraits.
