Parr casts a quizzical, humorous and sometimes ironic eye on British society. His talent for spotting telling juxtapositions is rehearsed in these early black and white images. He later abandoned this format in favour of the deliberately garish colours for which he is best known. The subject of these images is the English at leisure, in which the archetypal landmarks of the tourist industry act as a backdrop for moments of witty observation.
