Having fled Austria in 1933, Suschitzky settled in London in 1935, where he worked as a freelance photographer for illustrated magazines and later as a cinematographer. This picture of children on a car ride on Hampstead Heath is one of many photographs he made of daily life in his adoptive city. Children were a subject of particular photographic interest to Suschitzky and in 1940 he published a how-to book called Photographing Children.
