Paul Strand (1890–1976)
‘Akeley Motion Picture Camera, New York City’
1923, printed 1975

Strand is best known today for still photography, but throughout the 1920s he made his living as a filmmaker. He made a series of photographs of an expensive new movie camera soon after purchasing it, delighting in its engineering. Here, Strand explores the machine as a fitting modern subject, creating a fusion between art and technology.
