Gallery label
Gallery 100 ‘A History of Photography’, 2014-2015, label text: Edward Steichen (1879–1973) ‘Heavy Roses, Voulangis, France’ 1914, printed 1981 This is probably the last photograph Steichen took in France before the outbreak of the First World War. The image of sensual blooms slowly withering can be viewed as a metaphor for the ensuing tragedy. The image has a painterly quality and was taken when Steichen aspired to be a painter. After the war, he returned to Voulangis and destroyed all of his paintings. Photogravure Museum no. Ph.303-1982 (06 03 2014)
