This is probably the last photograph Steichen took in France before the outbreak of the First World War. The image of sensual blooms slowly withering can be viewed as a metaphor for the ensuing tragedy. The image has a painterly quality and was taken when Steichen aspired to be a painter. After the war, he returned to Voulangis and destroyed all of his paintings.
