Portrait, head and shoulders, to right and looking to front; the sitter is wearing a ruff. Features finely hatched in brown and sanguine with some stipple, black and touches of white in the eyes, on a yellowish carnation ground; hair in pale brown wash,lined in darker colour; ruff in very pale brown wash, modelled in impasted white; dress in black wash faintly modelled in pale grey; background a lilac wash, floated wet-in-wet and hatched in black especially to right; a gold marginal strip; on vellum put down on pasteboard.

Frame: A modern gilt locket with loop hanger and push-fit glass.
