Portrait, head and shoulders, turned slighlty to right and looking to front; the sitter is wearing armour. Features in short bold hatches of brown and sanguine, with blue-grey shadow and some white heightening, on a pale carnation ground; hair in brown washes, hatched with darker colour and heightened with gouache; armour in opaque grey washes heightened with white; collar in pale grey wash, modelled in white; background a thick brown wash passing into grey with white lights to right; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.
Frame: Twentieth-century copper-gilt rim of plain strip, the convex glass fitted into a rebate; a plain brass backplate; the hanger of solid cast cosse de pois type, combined with flat wire spirals of four turns; packed out with a card printed: ... ECARY,/ ... d Goldsm ...

F H A Wallop before 192 7 , when it was placed on loan at the V&A until 1949; given in 1933 to Alan Evans, by whom bequeathed to the National Gallery, 1974; placed on indeterminate loan at the V&A (see Appendix 3), There is some evidence in the MS guard book of the 192 7 Wallop Loan, compiled mainly by Basil Long, that the miniature may once have been in the possession of L C Cary, the Master of Falkland, (1) who told A C Stokes in January |
