This photograph is one of 40 views of the river Thames, taken by Victor Albert Prout on his journey by boat from London to Oxford. They are part of a portfolio titled The Thames London to Oxford, published by Virtue and Company, London, in 1862. The portfolio includes two indexes listing the title of each photograph. Some of the photographs show the house boat on which he traveled, which he had converted into a darkroom.

Victor Albert Prout (1835–77) From the series The Thames London to Oxford, 1862 Prout produced an impressive photographic journey along the River Thames, from the Houses of Parliament to Magdalen Bridge in Oxford. The panoramic format suited the wide expanses of riverside landscape he depicted. He completed the journey in a covered darkroom boat, where he prepared and developed his negatives.
