Mao Zedong's personal aim behind the Cultural Revolution was to bolster his own position within the Communist Party. Posters helped to propagate the cult and here he is seen literally the central figure. This poster probably refers to an actual visit made by Mao to Yan 'an in order to demonstrate his camaraderie with his people.

Red Chinese text on white in centre across lower margin (four large characters). Full colour image of Chairman Mao surrounded by villagers. Six happy children sit in the foreground. Chairman Mao stands in the centre smoking a cigarette with one hand placed lovingly on a little girl's shoulder. He is dressed in grey trousers and overcoat and wears a scarf around his neck. Smiling crowds recede into the distance. Hillside village in the rear ground.
