Object history
Compare this with the signed Castellani pendant (M.222-1917). The overall construction of this piece, and most of the detailing, is strikingly similar to that of the signed pendant, the chief difference being that two rubies set proud in individual scalloped frames are substituted for a single sapphire intaglio. There is a growing body of evidence that the Castellani firm supplemented its acknowledged historicist productions with more dubious objects, either old pieces improved by additions or (as in this instance) with works which might be passed off as antique by dealers.
